Code of Behavior
The school is a place of learning. There must be an atmosphere based on
mutual respect, concern and a desire to get the best education possible.
Students are expected to be courteous, and to respect the property and
personal rights and feelings of others. Fighting, profanity, vandalism and
harassment are not acceptable.
Students are expected to be in class on time, and to demonstrate courteous
behavior so that each individual’s rights are respected and everyone can learn
in an orderly environment. Students are expected to be prepared with
notebooks, textbooks, and completed assignments on every school day.
Textbooks must be returned at the end of the term.
SCHOOL RULES
1. Carry your program card and Student ID at all times. It must be shown
upon request of any staff member. Your ID card cannot be altered or defaced.
2. Students are required to carry a pass when not in a classroom. It must be
shown upon request.
3. Smoking, gambling and the use of alcohol are prohibited, as well as
possession of “Mace” or other dangerous substances.
4. Items identified with “gangs”, such as scarves, bandannas, beads, and
clothing with names or symbols may not be worn or brought to school by any
students.
5. Beepers and cellular phones are prohibited in the building. Possession of
these items will lead to confiscation. Radios, CD Players, MP3 players, and
walkmans may not be played or seen in the building. All confiscated items will
be returned to parents at the P.T. A. Meeting, the second Tuesday of each
month.
6. Attendance, punctuality and effort are required if you are to succeed in
school. Admittance after 10:00 AM requires a note from a parent or doctor.
Cutting means missing any class on your program. Lateness to school or class
requires a late pass. Make special appointments (e.g. doctor) after the school
day. You may not leave the school building during the day without official
permission, which can be obtained from the Attendance Office or the Assistant
Principal of Security. Lunch is an assigned period; you must report to the
cafeteria on time. Remain there until officially dismissed.
7. The elevator is only for students who have obtained an elevator pass from
the Medical Office. A student with a current pass must show it each time he/she
uses the elevator. Students must provide documentation from their physician
in order to receive an
elevator pass.
8. Appropriate attire is expected of everyone. Hats and scarves may not be
worn by any student, either male or female, in the school. Warm weather attire
should be discrete.
9. Graffiti or damaging of school property will require repayment for damage
and may lead to suspension or arrest.
10. Fighting or being involved in a fight will lead to disciplinary action, e.g.
suspension, arrest.
11. Pulling fire alarms, setting firecrackers or other use of fire extinguishers will
lead to suspension and possible police involvement.
12. Assisting intruders into the building will result in suspension or possible
arrest.
13. Students are expected to follow the directions of their teachers.
CHANCELLOR’S REGULATIONS
1. WEAPONS
No weapons can be carried by students. These include knives, guns,
switchblades, razor blades, box cutters, laser devices, chukka sticks, spiked
belts, bracelets or chains. A Superintendent’s suspension is an automatic
penalty for any student found in possession of any of these. Such a
suspension involves a hearing at the Board of Education Hearing Office. City
Law states that possession of large knives (and sharp pointed instruments) is a
menace to the public health, safety and welfare of the people of the City. A
person is liable for arrests for doing so. Three or more articles of finger jewelry
are considered to be weapons. Please note that imitation weapons, e.g. toy
guns, cigarette lighters that look like guns, etc., are viewed by the Police
Department as potential weapons.
2. CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES
Use or sale of drugs or alcohol will result in administrative and legal action.
3. PRINCIPAL’S SUSPENSION
(All suspensions must be approved by the Principal.)
A Principal’s suspension can mean suspension from school for a period to be
determined by the Principal, not to exceed five school days.
. SUPERINTENDENT’S SUSPENSION
A Superintendent’s suspension can mean suspension from the school for a
period to be determined by the Superintendent’s Office. The types of conduct
which may result in such suspension include: possessing or using weapons;
using force against school personnel; inflicting serious injury to another person;
possessing, selling or using illegal drugs or controlled substances, and
engaging in behavior that creates a substantial risk or results in injury.
5. “ ALTERNATIVE TO SUSPENSION” PROGRAM
This program is designed to help students adjust to school rules. As a pre-
suspension intervention, students who violate school rules may be given up to
five days in this program. For this time period students will not follow their
regular school program. In place of receiving days without “regular” classroom
instruction, students will be placed in this class designed to provide assistance
and guidance. Failure to comply with the rules of this structured in-school
environment may result in a Principal’s suspension.
6. SCANNING
Scanning will take place randomly. All students must submit to scanning.
Failure to do so may result in a suspension.
