Welcome to the Communication Arts Academy!
Michele Washington, Leader

The communications Arts Academy is a smaller learning community where students,
teachers, counselors and administrators are known to each other on a first name basis.
Our academy's focus is on Media Technology, but as we expand, we hope to include,
Music Technology, Journalism and Theater. Students in the 9th grade take core
courses in their major subjects.

Our tenth graders begin their introduction to the world of film and video with the
introductory course in Mass Media.

Our Studio 316 is a real TV studio where students learn to use sound boards, cameras
and editing equipment to create their own documentaries, short films and videos. We
are one of the few high schools in the NYC area that has won the prestigious National
Student Television Awards (the baby "Emmy") for technical editing, no easy feat!

As our students meet the standards set by NY State and NY City to meet their diploma
requirements, they will also work hard to keep their creative "eyes" focused and their
imaginations in motion! One day an alumnus of August Martin High School will win an
Academy or Emmy Award for outstanding work in the Film or TV industry, after all, the
possibilities are endless!!

"Where technology and imagination create endless possibilities"

Audio Visual Technology will be a key part of instruction in the Communication Arts
Academy with students spending a considerate amount of time in the Communication
Studio. Students will be educated in the many fields of entertainment and media arts
including Television Production, Script Writing, Directing, Camera Use, Sound Board
and Editing.

Along with Introduction to Communications and Film Study, graduation requirements
include the production of a performance video or project reflective of the individual
student's interest.

Communication Arts Academy students will be eligible to participate in the HBO Pencil
Awards, an award program for novice film makers and the National Student Television
Academy Awards of the Arts and Sciences also known as the EMMY Awards. August
Martin High School students had the honor of being awarded an EMMY during the 2003
school year.
